The hard life of insect pests: species interactions in the cereal food web
Insect pests cause damage in our crops by their herbivory and by spreading various plant diseases. I outline some of our current studies in wheat that concerns the predatory and non-consumptive effect of arthropod predators on pests and on their potential to transmit pathogens. I also discuss the workings of cereal ecosystems more widely and share our initial research and future plans in the molecular mapping of trophic pathways and studying plant mediated competition between different herbivores.
